The countdown is on for the London premiere of Chris Hannan’s critically acclaimed political drama What Shadows, after its premiere last year at Birmingham Rep. Watch interviews here with Tony and Olivier Award winner Ian McDiarmid, who stars as Enoch Powell, and director Roxana Silbert here…

What Shadows, commissioned by Birmingham Rep, tells some of the story behind former Conservative MP Enoch Powell’s explosive 1968 ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech, bringing to life the community that inspired it and, 30 years later, looking at its effects on a young black woman trying to make sense of her own life and identity. The woman sets out to meet Powell and get answers.

In this video, McDiarmid and Silbert discuss the play and its implications for today:

“How do we talk to people hate? How do we speak across the divide? How do we communicate with someone we fundamentally disagree with?”Roxana Silbert

“Could he have put it better?
“Was he completely wrong?
“Or did he have a point?”Ian McDiarmid

Ahead of What Shadows, you can also read and listen to the full ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech here, and watch our collection of documentary and news videos showing reactions to the speech here.

What Shadows runs at the Park Theatre from 27 September to 28 October 2017. Mates co-founder Terri Paddock will chair a free post-show Q&A with the company on Tuesday 10 October.
