Savoy Theatre, London – until 31 August 2019

9 To 5 the Musical is based on 20th Century Fox’s picture and was originally produced on Broadway by Robert Greenblatt in April 2009. It’s written by Patricia Resnik, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton.

The show tells the story of Doralee, Violet and Judy – three workmates pushed to boiling point by their sexist and egotistical boss. Inspired by the cult film this hilarious new West End production is about teaming up, standing up and taking care of business.

This production is full of colour and vibrancy but for me it unfortunately lacks something and I can’t quite put my finger on it? The lead cast consisting of Caroline Sheen as Violet Newstead, Amber Davies as Judy Bernly, Natalie McQueen as Doralee Rhodesall work together well. Sheen, Davies and McQueen all gave strong performances. But for me it was Bonnie Langford as Roz Keith and Brian Conley as Franklin Hart who stole scenes and wowed me with their comic timing.

I liked the introduction by Dolly Parton and all the glitz and glamour of the production. The cheese element was exactly what I’d hoped it would be, but the pace at times lacked with some scenes seeming unnecessary or fillers. Its fun and energy didn’t escape me with choreography by Lisa Stevens another high point.

As I said at the beginning I can’t put my finger on what the issue was, and it was a perfectly enjoyable evening but I didn’t feel the elation as the finale ended that I thought I would. However for anyone looking for a colourful, vibrant sassy night out or a lover of the film or Dolly Parton then this is a one you would enjoy.
