A cuddly lobster, shadow puppets, stars, glitter – they’re all here in the production images of Sycorax Collective’s hit one-woman show Blue. Take a look, then book your tickets!
Created by actress, puppeteer and writer Kim Scopes, Blue runs at Arts at the Old Fire Station, Oxford on 22 June 2019 as part of Offbeat Festival, and at the Lion and Unicorn Theatre, London from 30 June to 1 July.
Blue is an abstract, one-woman show about a woman who lives on the moon. Using poetry, clowning and a lobster called Spock, it explores living with anxiety and depression, and the importance of reaching out when you’re not okay.
The production is a journey of isolation, created drawing on Scopes’ own experiences and through collecting examples of what it is like to live with these conditions. The fun and engaging interactive show aims to provide hope for audience members struggling with those conditions and education for those not, while entertaining everyone.
When it was staged at Camden Fringe, the production received a wealth of positive reviews, including ★★★★★ from The Upcoming, who called it “Clever, funny, beautiful” and ★★★★ from Remote Goat, who praised it for being “Charming, original and informative.”
Holli Dillon directs the production, while actor and puppeteer Andrew James Spooner lends his vocal talents to the piece.
Offbeat Festival celebrates new theatre, comedy, dance, family show, spoken word and music running at four venues across Oxford between 17 and 29 June. It also features Rowan Padmore‘s new play about bereavement and loneliness Run Stanley Run and the Olivier Award-winning Rotterdam.
Blue is part of a busy summer season at the Lion and Unicorn Theatre that also includes BoxLess Theatre’s tale of a young woman on the verge of adulthood Hedgehog, tale of mental health within the LGBTQ+ community Fast Love and Elegy Theatre’s tale of online escapism Holy Land.
