Cheating Death, Max Nowaz’s dark comedy about a dead man who wakes up, will receive a new lease of life when it is staged at the Cockpit Theatre this spring. First Time Productions present the surreal show from 21 February to 10 March 2019 at the Marylebone venue – book your tickets now!
Nowaz’s play was first seen in one-act form at Bedford’s The Place Theatre in 2013. Far from dying a death, it proved extremely popular. Nowaz has reworked it over the last six years and brought it back to life as a three-act show at the Cockpit Theatre.
John is having a bad day! He has been laid in a coffin in his living room for people to pay their last respects… but he wakes up. Much to the surprise of his girlfriend and her new lover, who she has invited to view the flat, left to her by John! John only remembers a car crash, being in hospital and some strange dreams. Everyone struggles to come to terms with John’s new reality after not just one but two life changing events.
Cheating Death follows John as he tries to get back to some semblance of normality… but life will never be the same again.
Max Nowaz is a playwright and novelist. His eclectic work includes children’s story Timbi’s Dream, science fiction tale The Arbitrator and fantasy thriller Get Rich or Get Lucky. His latest play, A Holiday to Remember, is due to be brought to the stage shortly after the run of Cheating Death.

They’re directed by fellow graduate, Sophie Wilson. The Poor School was founded by Paul Caister in 1986 to make top quality acting training financially available to all. After more than 30 years, it closed in July 2018.
