In our continuing series, our editor Lisa Martland picks out some of her Top Picks from the last week of theatre (to 5 January 2020), ranging from at Aleks Sierz’s mixed feelings about Snowflake at the Kiln Theatre (although the big finish is worth waiting for) to Natalie Abrahami’s fascinating and delightful staging of Ella Hickson’s play Swive at Shakespeare’s Globe, as reviewed by Carole Woddis. Plus catch up on Ought To Be Clowns’ top moments of the decade and find out what the Mates think of Curtains and Soho Cinders.

Snowflake – Kiln Theatre
Aleks Sierz: “The joys of Clare Lizzimore’s production, on Jeremy Herbert’s too boringly naturalistic set with its Christmas tree and lights (yawn), is mainly constrained by Mike Bartlett’s rather sketchy writing, but does deliver in its last burning minutes.”
Swive – Shakespeare’s Globe
Carole Woddis: “Ninety minutes speeds by in this hermetic, closeted communal embrace until at the last, theatrical reality is once again reasserted with a stroke of brilliance.” ★★★★
Curtains – Wyndham’s Theatre
Emma Clarendon: “There is no denying that this is a show that is fun to watch unfold. If you are suffering from winter blues – then you need to see this.” ★★★★
10 of my top moments of the decade
Ian Foster: “Ever behind the curve, I present 10 of my top moments in a theatre over the last ten years (plus a few bonus extra ones because whittling down this list was hard, and it will probably be different tomorrow anyway).”
Soho Cinders – Charing Cross Theatre
Elaine Chapman: “Director Will Keith has revamped and brilliantly revitalised these cast members for the rest of the run at the Charing Cross Theatre. B sure to catch it while it’s showing.”
