Are you mad about the musicals yourself?
I love musical theatre. It was musical theatre that got me first singing. At the age of eight, I played the role of Joseph in Joseph and His amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. It was there that my love for music began – I was then asked by Andrew Lloyd Webber to play Joseph in the West End some 15 years later!  Since then, I’ve gone on to play some great roles in some amazing shows from Les Mis to Legally Blonde.

What’s your favourite musical that you’ve ever seen?
Les Mis. The book is epic and what Boubil and Schonberg have done to capture the same emotion through music is incredible. I cry every time I see it… And I did it for 18 months!

What’s your favourite musical that you’ve performed in?
Les Mis. Ha! It’s all about Les Mis! Well, it has just its 30th birthday, so is worth a couple of mentions!  I was involved in the 25th anniversary production of the show (which is now the version on Broadway). Creating a brand new version of this classic was an unforgettable experience. I could make Marius whoever I wanted him to be.

Next year, you star in a new tour of Footloose.
I can’t wait! I’m playing Willard, the one who can’t dance – life imitating art! I love the film. I didn’t realise how many hits are in there. It’s bound to be a hit with the fans.

What’s your favourite showtune in Mad About the Musicals?
“Heaven on Their Minds” from Jesus Christ Superstar. I’ve never sung it before and I love the rocky edge. It’s quite demanding, but I love the challenge!

Any anecdotes from the tour so far?
The end of Act 1 had us all in hysterics the other night. I’d adjusted the mic stand to its lowest point (the size a child would use) and tightened it so tight. The girls and Michael (Courtney) all had a go untightening it live on stage during We Will Rock You – they couldn’t do it! We all rolled around in fits… You probably had to be there!

Why should people come and see Mad About the Musicals?
It celebrates some of the best songs from some of the world’s best musicals all in one night. There’s not a song you won’t know. Every single song is a musical theatre hit!  And the song list ranges from older classics to more modern musicals. So there’s something for everyone. Even if you’re not a regular theatregoer you’ll know the songs, I promise.
