After two stints at London’s Lion & Unicorn Theatre, a slew of four-star reviews and an Offies nomination for Best New Play, Proforca Theatre’s premiere of James Lewis’ latest play Lately now heads to Coventry’s Albany Theatre with a stellar new pairing. Time to get booking!
The two-hander, directed by David Brady, was first premiered with two casts – Fred Wardale and Gabrielle Nellis-Pain, and Matt Wake and Lauren Ferdinand – alternating performances for the initial London dates from 7 to 18 September 2021. Due to popular demand, new London dates were added from 5 to 9 October 2021, which Wake and Ferdinand reprised.
Now, for the one-off performance on Friday 29 October at the Albany Theatre as part of Coventry’s City of Culture programming, Fred Wardale and Lauren Ferdinand will couple up for the first time.
Lately centres around Cal & Alf. Callum & Alison. They were supposed to be part of each other’s lives forever if only the universe had let things happen the way they should.
But whoever they were before, they’re different people now, and the problem with living here is that it always pulls you back again, no matter how hard you try to get away.
Lately is written by James Lewis and directed by Proforca Theatre artistic director David Brady, who have had previous acclaimed hits together with dystopian drama At Last (co-written with Alexander Knott) and Feel. Brady is joined on the creative team by associate directors Lucy Glassbrook and Jess Barton, dramaturg Georgie Bailey and casting director Suzy Gatliff.
Lately contains adult themes, very strong language and references to suicide.
