When Angela borrows her friend’s flat for a romantic assignation with an eminent QC she hopes for an afternoon to remember. Unfortunately that’s exactly what she gets… Throw into the mix a cross-dressing neighbour and an over-zealous cleaner to set up a perfect scenario for a modern day tale of adultery and mistaken identities.
Performers Stuart Simons and Grace McInerny return to Upstairs at the Gatehouse to star in Flat Out, having previously appeared in 2018’s Christmas production Nice Work If You Can Get It, as does Tom Pepper, who was in Crazy For You. Cathy Walker, Richard Earl, Jake Mitchell, Jennifer Matter & Hollie Taylor complete the cast.

The creative team is packed with female talent. Joining writer Jennifer Selway are producer Katie Plews, designer Emily Bestow and lighting designer Sarah McColgan. John Plews, who, with Katie Plews, is co-Artistic Director of Upstairs at the Gatehouse, directs.
Flat Out follows Selway’s previous plays Wallis, about Wallis Simpson, and Treating Odette, both of which previously play Upstairs at the Gatehouse. Camden New Journal described the latter as “a beautifully acted post-war costume drama”.
When not writing plays for Upstairs at the Gatehouse, Selway writes a regular column for The Sunday Express.
Meet the cast:
Richard Earl‘s recent stage credits include Bang Bang and Dick Whittington at Mercury Theatre and Abigail’s Party, The 39 Steps and Fallen Angels at Theatre by the Lake, where he is a regular performer. Costume drama fans will also have seen him in series 3 of Victoria on ITV.
Jennifer Matter‘s theatre credits include Creation Theatre Company’s Robin Hood and Macbeth, Fat Christ and Coffin at King’s Head Theatre and The Response at Seagull Theatre. She also appears on TV in Sally Wainwright’s new drama Gentleman Jack.
Jake Mitchell boasts credits including Immersion Theatre’s Alice in Wonderland, and 4.48 Psychosis, Mercury Fur, High Society and Macbeth while at RADA.
Grace McInerny recently graduated from Arts Educational. She returns to Upstairs at the Gatehouse, where she previously appeared in Nice Work If You Can Get It.
Tom Pepper previously appeared in Aria Entertainment’s production of Yank at both Charing Cross Theatre and Hope Mill Theatre, Ovation’s Crazy For You and Curtains at the Landor Theatre.
Hollie Taylor was seen in Scrooge (Leicester Curve), Goodnight Mister Tom (Duke of York’s Theatre and on tour), Matilda the Musical and Betty Blue Eyes (both West End).
Stuart Simons‘ credits include Nice Work If You Can Get It (Upstairs at the Gatehouse), Sweeney Todd (88 London Road), Spend Spend Spend (Union Theatre) and The Adventures of Mr Toad (Gordon Craig Theatre).
Cathy Walker‘s latest stage credits include The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, The Mousetrap, Present Laughter and Nesting.
