Tom Hartwell’s new play FLOOD premieres this summer at London’s Tristan Bates Theatre. The premiere production, directed by Georgie Staight for Paper Creatures Theatre during Camden Fringe, runs for one week only from 31 July to 5 August 2017. Watch the very cool, and very stormy, show trailer below.

Adam is drowning. His small village has flooded and his loved ones have all moved closer to the capital in search of something better. Stranded on an island of nostalgia, whiskey bottle in hand, Adam is forced to confront his future when those closest to him return after the death of his mother. Upon their arrival, repressed truths and unsettling secrets are revealed.

FLOOD is a complex and humane portrayal of a group of friends struggling to define themselves beyond the confines of their small town. When the water keeps rising, how do you stay afloat?

Paper Creatures founders Jon Tozzi and Nathan Coenen

New company Paper Creatures Theatre, founded by actors Jon Tozzi and Nathan Coenen, have a clear mission: to tell simple, bold and compelling stories that hold up a mirror to the Millennial generation. (How’d it all start? In a Travelodge on tour, of course. Read more about the company here.)

The company commissioned Tom Hartwell (“a writer of our generation”, London Pub Theatres) to write new comedy-drama FLOOD because, say  of our fascination with young people who want to escape their home towns for ‘something better’. We all know someone who is either stuck in the past, or constantly looking to the future. So we feel this is a story everyone can relate to.”

Tom Hartwell’s writing has been performed across the London Fringe, including Theatre 503, The Arcola, Tristan Bates and The Old Red Lion. His first play You Tweet my Face Space was performed at the Edinburgh Fringe 2016 to critical success. Tom is also a literary scout for Theatre 503. Director Georgie Staight’s previous credits include Dreamless Sleep, and most recently Dubailand at the Finborough Theatre.

The FLOOD cast are: Jon Tozzi (as Adam), Nathan Coenen, Tom Hartwell, Molly McGeachin and Emily Céline Thomson. The production is designed by Oscar Selfridge, with lighting by Ali Hunter and sound by Benjamin Winter.
