Physical theatre company BoxLess Theatre will debut their new drama Hedgehog at the Lion and Unicorn Theatre next month. It will be their first show as Associate Artists of the newly relaunched venue. Book your tickets now!
Written by Alexander Knott, the production runs from 11 to 22 June 2019.
The 1990s. The East Midlands. A girl left standing on the edge of the dance floor. And a dead hedgehog. This story of 17-year-old Manda, at the end of the 90s. Dad’s pissed in the living room, watching the darts. Mum’s on the rosé, and Manda’s losing her mind. She’s on the cusp of womanhood, and the world’s about to enter a brand spanking new Millennium.
Hedgehog is a story of anxiety, sex, love, family and identity as well as coming to terms with life, her place in this brave new world and ultimately, how we all find a way to cope.
Based on real experiences, Hedgehog explores how huge and insurmountable the world can seem to a person coming to terms with adulthood, and how anxiety can take root in young people.
Hedgehog follows the success of BoxLess Theatre’s previous production Loop, which earned a host of four and five star reviews, being described by North West End as “An engaging, exciting play which will make you laugh, feel sympathy and recognise your own story,” and leading Manchester Theatre Awards to say “BoxLess Theatre is a company that does not recognise limitations when it comes to staging their productions.”
Knott wrote both Loop and Hedgehog. In addition to being a writer, he is also a director, creative producer and performer of BoxLess Theatre and joint director of Bag of Beard. His other plays include Bath, Blue Blue and Brenda from UKIP. He’s also under commission to deliver a new dystopian drama for Proforca Theatre at the Lion and Unicorn Theatre.
BoxLess Theatre co-founder Zöe Grain plays Manda. She most recently appeared in Oneness at the Blue Elephant Theatre and Southwark Playhouse. Grain is joined in the cast by Emily Costello and Lucy Annable. Both performers previously worked on BoxLess’ production of Loop.
The production is directed by Georgia Richardson, who recently graduated from Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. While studying, she was a recipient of a Laurence Olivier Bursary and was a finalist in the Stephen Sondheim Society Young Performer of the Year.
Music for the production is provided by Samuel Heron and James Demaine.
Hedgehog plays as part of the first season of the relaunched Lion and Unicorn Theatre, alongside an eclectic group of productions including love-spreading mix of drag, panto and storytelling, Mama G’s Story Time Roadshow, tale of a couple struggling with reality, River in the Sky, and Elegy Theatre’s exploration of online escapism Holy Land.
Hedgehog runs at the Lion and Unicorn Theatre, 42-44 Gaisford St, Kentish Town, London NW5 2ED from 11 to 22 June 2019 with performances Tuesdays to Saturdays at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced £12. CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE!
About BoxLess Theatre
BoxLess was founded in 2016, by Zöe Grain and Alexander Knott, to give a platform to underrepresented movers, dancers and physical theatre artists, as well as to fuse original new writing with dance and physical theatre, creating an exciting new way of seeing both. Their debut production Loop was named one of Theatre Weekly’s Top Ten Off West End Plays of 2017 and went on to be performed at Theatre Royal Stratford East and 53Two in Manchester. It received critical acclaim and multiple five-star reviews, finishing 2018 at the Edinburgh Fringe where it took up residence at Underbelly for the month.
