As Jermyn Street gears up for its just-announced autumn Rebels season, this summer’s Reaction season continues apace. The European premiere of Boo Killebrew’s The Play About My Dad finishes tomorrow (21 July 2018) to make way for the critically acclaimed transfer of Hymn to Love, starring Elizabeth Mansfield as Edith Piaf. Gen up and check out production photos below – and then get booking!
Twenty years after its premiere, Elizabeth Mansfield reprises her performance in Hymn to Love, the one-woman show written especially for her and in celebration of French chanteuse Edith Piaf (1915-1963). Following success at the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick, it transfers for a limited London season at Jermyn Street from 25 July to 18 August 2018, with a press night on 27 July.
“I’m singing tonight. There’s nothing else. Nothing but singing.”
In a Manhattan hotel room, Edith Piaf rehearses for her last US concert. But for Piaf the hotel holds memories. Eight years earlier she had telephoned her lover, boxer Marcel Cerdan, begging him to overcome his fear of flying and leave France to be with her. Hours later she heard the terrible news that his plane had crashed. Marcel was dead.
An extraordinary musical homage to Piaf, Hymn to Love explores love, loss and longing with 13 of Piaf’s famous songs, each given fresh meaning in vibrant new translations. Passionate, memorable and unmissable theatre.
First seen in 1998, when it premiered at Mercury Theatre Colchester before Edinburgh and London runs, Hymn to Love was specially devised by Annie Castledine, Steve Trafford (who also translates) and Mansfield.
This new staging, a co-production between Theatre by the Lake and York Theatre Royal in association with Ensemble, comes to London after a Northern tour. It’s directed by Damian Cruden, with lighting by Andrew J Lindsay and sound by Yvonne Gilbert. Onstage, Mansfield is accompanied by Patrick Bridgeman on piano.
Elizabeth Mansfield‘s many other stage performance credits include Marie Lloyd in Marie in the West End, for which she was nominated for a Best Actress Olivier Award.
Hymn to Love runs from 25 July to 18 August 2018 at the Jermyn Street Theatre, 16b Jermyn Street, London SW1Y 6ST. Performances are Tuesdays to Saturdays at 7.30pm, with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 3.30pm. Tickets are priced £30 (concessions £20). CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE!
