Next up in our Spotlight feature is Netflix-inspired, all-female musical improvisation troupe Notflix, which plays Edinburgh Festival from 2 to 28 August 2017. I caught up with the team:
Describe your show in three words.
Improvised, movie-musical, all-female.
Is this your first Edinburgh Fringe performance experience?
This will be Notflix’s third EdFringe, our 2nd being here for the full month. Waiting for the Call have brought Notflix every year, however each year it’s evolved creatively. We research and train so hard so we can incorporate multiple styles and influences. We literally Notflix and chill on films and musicals to make sure we’re at the top of our game due to the nature of our show being completely improvised and using just one audience suggestion. This year feels like it’s going to be bigger and better than ever!
Who else are you most looking forward to seeing while at the Fringe?
Prom Kween was also a hit show at VAULT Festival 2017 this January and it is fabulous, so we’re very excited to see them at the fringe too! We are so excited to be Gilded Balloon neighbours with My Dad Wrote a Porno as ALL of us in Notflix love the podcast! They’ve (quite rightly) sold out, so we will be desperately trying to hear through the doors (or hanging from the lighting rig!). Or if anyone can get us in… Abandomanis incredible! Improvised rap royalty! We’ll be doing a cast trip to see his new show for sure!
How do you feel to be performing at Gilded Balloon?
We are so honoured to be back for a second year at Gilded Balloon! We loved the venue and Karen Koren and the whole team who work so hard so we’re so pleased to have been asked back. It was like belonging to a very lovely, very busy theatrical family, so we’re really looking forward to the family reunion.
Who or what are your inspirations?
Because of it being improvised, each show is different from the last and completely unique. So it’s like ‘We did an awesome ‘feminist Top Gun’ on such-and-such a day, yesterday was ‘Titanic with a happy ending and a second (LGBT) love story’, WHAT WILL TOMORROW BRING??’ It’s honestly like an (good) addiction.
It is genuinely just as exciting for us getting to discover what each day’s show is on stage, because we have no idea what it is going to be either! That excitement of ‘the unknown’ keeps us going and inspired each day.
What is your secret to surviving the intense, fast pace of the fringe?
We drink A LOT of smoothies at Notflix HQ! We may well be the green-est improv troupe going. We make sure we look after ourselves and each other, because a month of the fringe is pretty intense. Particularly when performing and flyering every day. Making sure we get enough sleep and food is a priority, and also taking time to be a fringe visitor for an hour or two so we can turn off and enjoy it, because it is such an incredible atmosphere and experience and it goes by so quickly.
What are the future plans for your show?
We’ve played in some incredible venues in London so now we’d love to take Notflix on a mini tour around the UK at some point! And we’d also love to dip our toes into International waters in the not-so-distant future too!
What is the best production you have seen this year – can be any genre, style, in any theatre or performance space?
A number of us all went together to see Dreamgirls on the West End and had our minds blown and faces shredded off. It was amazing to see women, particularly black women, owning that stage! The voices! GOALS! We always aim to be strong and empowered feminist characters in every one of our shows, and it was just spinetingling to see it being done so beautifully on a big West End stage.
Is there anything else you want to highlight about your show/ theatre company/ production?
We are all-female and each show is feminist, 100% improvised, inspired by a movie suggestion and genuine (albeit improvised) musical theatre. Notflix is a family friendly show (our favourite shows are often Disney/Pixar suggestions) and absolutely LGBT+ positive/inclusive/fabulous (as about half of the cast is LGBT+). Notflix is very fun, extremely funny and highly addictive.
