The actress chatted to Emma Clarendon about starring in Rags The Musical at the Park Theatre.

Hi Carolyn, thank you so much for talking to me. For those not familiar with Rags what can they expect from the musical?
People can expect to be taken on a journey of love, loss, hope, tradition, friendship and new beginnings told through a constantly undulating script, a wonderful score and much humour. The piece is being told at the turn of the century but its subjects are extremely relevant to today and will no doubt connect with you on many levels.

What was it that made you want to be a part of this production?
The challenge! The challenge of learning this great script and giving it all the subtle layers of emotion, tradition and history it deserves and having the opportunity to perform so many brilliant songs.

What would you say makes this show special?
It’s playfulness and connection to the world we know today.

How do you see your character Rebecca?
Rebecca is a strong willed character with heart. She has taken every traumatic experience and funnelled it in to driving herself on to a better future for her son. She is willing to push boundaries and ties of tradition to do this but still maintains integrity and respect.

Have you a favourite moment or song in the show?
I have many. We have only just begun our second week of rehearsals, so ask me in another week and I may be able to give you a specific moment or song. But for now I shall just invite you all to come join us and see what you think.

How has it been working on the production so far?
Brilliant. The rehearsal process has been full steam ahead, crammed with so much variety, learning of history and traditions. Getting to know our wonderful cast’s characters and listening to our incredible actor musicians bringing the traditional Klezmer band to life.

What are you most looking forward to about bringing this production of Rags to London audiences? Exactly that, bringing it to the audiences of London.

Rags the Musical will play at London’s Park Theatre from 9 January until 8 February 2020. My Theatre Mates founder Terri Paddock will host a post-show Q&A with Carolyn Maitland & other members of the company on 16 January.
