Cecile Leterme is currently starring in Cheek by Jowl’s production of Pericles which play at London’s Barbican until 21 April 2018. She spoke to Love London Love Culture about what to expect from the production….
Could you tell me a bit more about what audiences can expect from Périclès?
The life story of a man who, after being taken from shore to shore by the tempests of life and love, finally gets home and reunited with his family. It’s a story full of adventures, incredible events, and emotion at its deepest.
How excited are you about bringing the production to London?
Very, I must say! It’s incredible to come and play Shakespeare in French for an English audience. And I love England and London so much.
What have you enjoyed the most about working on Périclès?
Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod are absolutely wonderful to work with. So the rehearsals were witty, funny, clever and full of freedom. An actor’s dream. And diving into one of Shakespeare’s plays along with British people was tremendous. And also, since they know the play so well (they worked on it and put it on some 25 years ago) it was great to follow and understand how they wanted to deal with this story today.
What would you say makes this production so special?
I hope people will find it special. I think it is, really; it’s a unique vision of this man’s journey through time and places. Our little special “plus”, in these Brexit times, could be that British and French happily go on working together.
Could you tell me a bit more about your role in Périclès?
I play several characters, as do all my friend actors (although we never change costumes, not even a little bit, not even a more or less buttoned collar). I think I can say I play only positive characters, ones that will be beneficial to Pericles’s life.
Why should people come along to the Barbican and see the show?
Because we’re eager to share it with the Barbican audience! Because it’s a show with laughs and tears, just like real life.
