The actress chatted to Emma Clarendon about starring in Blues in the Night at the Kiln Theatre.

Hi Debbie, how does it feel to be part of this revival 30 years on since it was last seen in London?
I’m thrilled to be part of this revival with such an astonishing cast. I feel incredibly honoured to have been asked to join the team.

Could you tell me a bit more about what we can expect from Blues in the Night?
The action takes place in a run down hotel in 1939 Chicago, just after the Great Depression. Blues in the Night is essentially a song cycle of some of the most heartbreaking but beautifully uplifting blues and jazz numbers sung by four of the hotel’s inhabitants.

What was it about the show that made you want to be part of this production?
Being able to sing the blues all summer long! I also was excited to return to the Kiln Theatre having worked here nearly 20 years ago when it was the Tricycle Theatre.

What are you most looking forward to about being part of Blues in the Night? Seeing my dad in his element watching the show. He’s a huge blues fan so I’ve grown up listening and LOVING the blues.

If people are thinking about booking a ticket to see the show why should they?
Blues in the Night is rarely revived (shockingly) so don’t miss the opportunity to see this absolute gem of a show.
