This week I visited the newly renamed Jim Steinman suite at the Dominion Theatre, to catch up with Rob Fowler who plays Falco in Bat Out Of Hell – The Musical. We discussed attention to detail, favourite numbers and just who Rob would invite to a dinner party given the opportunity. Oh and his shoes definitely get a worthy mention.
Born in England, Rob Fowler trained as a mechanical engineer for Historic Formula 1. Inspired by the comedic talents of David Jason, at the age of 25 Fowler decided to pursue a career as an actor, starting out in various adaptations of Shakespeare plays at the Key Theatre, followed by the UK touring production of The Buddy Holly Story during which he was asked to join the cast of the German production of StarlightExpress in the roles of Caboose and Rusty/Greaseball.
Fowler’s subsequent German stage appearances include Rum Tum Tugger in Cats, Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, Berger in Hair, Death in Elizabeth, Jamie in The Last Five Years, Corny Collins in Hairspray, Galileo in We Will Rock You, the title role in Frank Wildhorn’s Dracula, Joe in the Latin Pop Opera Carmen Cubana and most recently Dan Goodman in Next to Normal.
Fowler has not only made a name for himself in both regional and national theatres throughout Europe, he has also performed as a solo artist in numerous arenas across Germany. His repertoire combining rock, pop and jazz.
As a composer, lyricist and frontman of the rock band Morton in 2006, Fowler released his first album Pillowtalk which enjoyed heavy rotation radio airplay with singles ‘Sorry’, ‘Irish Girl’, ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out’.
In 2008 Fowler returned to acting, this time in front of the camera in the Austrian romantic TV comedy series Ex. In 2012 Fowler (as a wish from his son) decided to take part in the ProSieben/Sat1 Casting-Show The Voice of Germany reaching the semi-finals, where he presented his original song The Hurt.
Together with Beat4Feet Fowler co-wrote the official EHF Champions League 2014 song Do It Like Us.
Prior to Fowler’s participation with The Voice of Germany 2012, Rob was part of the 2008 original cast of Richard O’Briens European touring production of The Rocky Horror Show reloaded portraying the leading role of the eccentric Dr. Frank’n’Furter, in which Fowler achieved an abundance of new fans and followers.
Fowler is currently working on an original musical The Boy Next Door. Book by playwright and Olivier award winner Stephen Clark, co/writer and direction Steven Dexter & musical supervision by Matt Smith.
Rob dedicates his performance to the late Stephen Clark
