Not long left to see Iris Theatre’s latest outdoor family production, performed in the grounds of St Paul’s Church, now transformed into an enchanted forest. The company’s new adaptation of Hansel & Gretel, which continues at the Covent Garden landmark (also known as the Actors Church) until next Sunday 3 September 2017, has been Offie-nominated for Best Production for Young People (Aged 8+) and has attracted some lovely notices. Opening tonight (Tuesday 8 August), Hansel & Gretel and the Witch Baba is written by Iris artistic director Daniel Winder and continues at St Paul’s, the Actors’ Church, until 3 September 2017.
Featuring a life-size, edible gingerbread house, Hansel & Gretel and the Witch Baba follows Hansel and Gretel as they travel deeper and deeper into a dark, forbidding forest. There, in the shadows, you might glimpse a figure in a red hood chased by a wolf, or a witch’s hut standing tall on chicken legs; all manner of magical beasts lurk in these woods…
This immersive fairytale, written by artistic director Daniel Winder and directed by Amy Draper, is guaranteed to fright and delight curious children and adventurous adults alike. Deshaye Gayle and Rosie Abraham are Hansel and Gretel, along with Josie Brightwell (Mother/Baby Yaga), Jennifer Clement (Vasilia/Marya), Nick Howard-Brown (Father/Koschei) and Will Kelly(Ivan/Baba Yagas).
