Mark Giesser’s just-opened, Jazz Age-set adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s 1899 short story The Lady with a Dog will transfer next month directly from south London’s White Bear Theatre in Kennington SE11 to west London’s Tabard Theatre in Chiswick W4. Got your tickets yet?

Damian Granville is a banker and devoted family man with an unconventional way of taking his summer holidays: he travels alone and looks for a woman to seduce. This particular year he spots a beautiful young lady walking a white Pomeranian dog. How can he resist? He’s a skilful player and sure of success. Except Anne Dennis, married herself for just two years, isn’t quite what he bargains for.

Beth Burrows (above) continues in the title role, along with original cast members Duncan MacInnes and Laura Glover as Anne and Damian’s respective spouses. Richard Lynson (right) takes over from Alan Turkington as Damian for the new Tabard dates.

Amongst reviews at the White Bear (See our Roundup here), My Theatre Mates blogger Anne Cox called the production “utterly enchanting” and Giesser’s decision to relocate the story to relocate Chekhov’s story to 1920s Britain as “inspired”.

Writer/director Mark Giesser has written, produced and directed numerous Off-West End and Off-Broadway shows. His writing work includes satirical drama (Good Morning, Alamo!) and comedy (Code of the West, How to Build a Better Tulip), and he has directed productions such as the UK premiere of Alan Alda’s drama Radiance and the 60th-anniversary revival of the original stage play of GigiThe Lady with a Dog has set design by Oscar Selfridge, costumes by Giulia Scrimieri and lighting and sound by Michele Cadei.

Commenting on the Tabard transfer, Mark Giesser said:

“I’m delighted to have had the opportunity to work with Michael Kingsbury to develop the show at the White Bear, and am now equally delighted to be able to work with Simon Reilly to bring the production to the Tabard, which has provided a home for a number of my productions.”

Simon Reilly of the Tabard Theatre added: “We are thrilled to be working with innovative creatives like Mark and dynamic theatres such as the White Bear to bring successful shows to new audiences. We hope this collaboration could be the start of further successful transfers across the Off West End theatre scene.”

Michael Kingsbury of the White Bear Theatre said: “The show has been a success for us at the White Bear, and it’s great to know that it can have a further life and be seen by more audiences at the Tabard.”
