After multiple extensions, an avalanche of five- and four-star reviews, and a visit and personal endorsement from Stephen Schwartz himself, Steven Dexter’s ‘glorious’, ‘incredible’, ‘truly inspiring’ immersive production of Schwartz’s 1972 Broadway musical classic Pippin must finish at London’s Charing Cross Theatre this Sunday (3 October 2021). We checked in with the show’s stars ahead of their final performances. Last chance to book!
With an infectiously unforgettable score from four-time Grammy winner, three-time Oscar winner and musical theatre giant Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, The Prince of Egypt), Pippin is the story of one young man’s journey to be extraordinary. Winner of four 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival, Pippin continues to captivate and appeal to the young at heart throughout the world.
Set in the ‘Summer of Love’ of 1967, we follow Pippin, a young prince with extraordinary dreams and aspirations on his quest to find passion, fulfilment and meaning in a joyful and life-affirming revival.
The cast includes Ryan Anderson as Pippin, Genevieve Nicole as Berthe, Jaydon Vijn as Theo and, having joined in September for the show’s extension, Alex Lodge as Charles. Here’s what they want audiences to know before their Summer of Love ends.
Ryan Anderson
“What I find fascinating about Pippin is that it was created nearly 50 years ago, and it still has so much relevance to how we live today. It explores the question I think most people ask: ‘what is the purpose of life?’.
“Seeing how audience members of all ages can take a different message from this show and incorporate it into their everyday lives makes this show special and why I believe it still feels current.
“I know that I have learnt a lot about how I live my life from being in this production personally, like ‘enjoying the simple things’ when life gets overwhelming. I will miss the intimacy this production has, we are an eight-person cast with a fantastic stage management team that has pulled together to create something so unique.”
Genevieve Nicole
“I have made friends for life on this job, and it has been an honour to share the stage with them. Pippin is a show very close to my heart and playing Berthe has been great for the soul.”
Jaydon Vijn
“The show is super funnnnn! Come watch before we finish on Sunday. It’s been a sweet summer. ✌🏼”
Alex Lodge
“For me personally, Pippin has been an absolute blast for the relatively short time I’ve been a part of it. I couldn’t believe my luck when I was asked to join the show for the extension, and it has proved itself to be a much-needed boost for audiences who have so missed coming to the theatre.
“It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions, facing physical and mental exhaustion at times – but the pay-off of being out there every night with this astonishingly talented, uncommonly kind and outrageously sexy cast has made every second of it worth it.
“It’s a brilliant production of a fascinating musical curiosity, and it will hold a special place in my heart for a long time to come.
“Come and Join Us whilst you still have the chance. I promise you – you won’t regret it.”
