Cleansed, National Theatre: 5th May – Sarah Kane’s play has made its National Theatre debut and received mixed reviews from critics. With reports of people fainting, it is a show for the brave-hearted with scenes of physical and sexual violence.
Sunset Boulevard, English National Opera: 7th May – This semi-staged production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical received lots of positive reviews when it opened , but now it prepares to say goodbye to London once more. X, Royal Court Theatre: 7th May – Alistair McDowell’s new play was described as ‘a slippery, challenging piece that is guaranteed to divide audiences.’ (Evening Standard) and so divided critics when it opened.
The Caretaker, Old Vic Theatre: 14th May – Harold Pinter’s play stars Timothy Spall, Daniel Mays and George MacKay. It is directed by Matthew Warchus and tells the story of Aston who has invited a tramp to stay with him at his brother’s flat. But what said brother returns, it soon turns into a power struggle. The Maids, Trafalgar Studios: 21st May – Jamie Lloyd’s production of Jean Genet’s play is the first time the play has been seen in the West End for twenty years. Critics reacted favourably to it.
