Proforca Theatre’s ongoing association with writer James Lewis’ continues next month with the premiere of Lately, an intimate two-hander about the dreams we never realise, the places we can never leave, and the people that bring us back down to earth again. Time to get booking!
Pre-Covid, Lately had been scheduled for April 2020. It will now have a strictly limited run from 7 to 18 September 2021 as the launch production for the autumn reopening season at London’s Lion & Unicorn Theatre, Proforca’s resident home. The press night on 9 September will include a post-show Q&A with Proforca and Lion & Unicorn artistic director David Brady, chaired by MyTheatreMates founder Terri Paddock, discussing both the play and theatre’s forthcoming autumn/winter plans.
“You’ve never been on your own, you always just thought you were…”
Cal & Alf. Callum & Alison. They were supposed to be part of each other’s lives forever, if only the universe had let things happen the way they should.
But whoever they were before, they’re different people now, and the problem with living here is that is always pulls you back again, no matter how hard you try to get away.
And the universe that sent them spinning into free-fall throws them together again when the girl who ran away comes back to find out what happened to the boy who didn’t want to leave.
And the question that the universe needs to answer most of all now is – Whatever happens to those bits of us we leave behind and thought we’d lost forever?
Lately is written by James Lewis and directed by Proforca Theatre artistic director David Brady, who have had previous acclaimed hits together with dystopian drama At Last (co-written with Alexander Knott) and Feel. After premiering at the Lion & Unicorn in March 2018 and touring, the latter returned in March 2019 to launch the theatre’s new regime under the management of David Brady.
The new production will be performed by two casts, alternating at each performance. Cast will be announced soon. Joining Brady on the creative team are associate directors Lucy Glassbrook and Jess Barton, dramaturg Georgie Bailey and casting director Suzy Gatliff.
Lately contains adult themes, very strong language and references to suicide.
Lately runs at the Lion and Unicorn Theatre, 42-44 Gaisford St, Kentish Town, London NW5 2ED from 7 to 18 September 2021 with performances Tuesdays to Saturdays at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced £12-14. CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE!
