NEWS: Adrian Edmondson & Kara Tointon star in RSC’s new Twelfth Night

Casting details – including Adrian Edmondson as Malvolio and Kara Tointon as Olivia – are announced for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Twelfth Night opening in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre this winter. The production runs in Stratford-upon-Avon from 2 November 2017 to 24 February 2018, with a press night on 9 November.

The show is directed by Christopher Luscombe, who returns to the RSC along with the creative team behind the critically acclaimed productions of Love’s Labour’s Lost and Much Ado About NothingChristopher Luscombe said:

“The great challenge of Twelfth Night is to reconcile its melancholy and joyful elements. I’m delighted to say that we’ve found an exceptional cast who, I believe, can do full justice to the play’s dazzling emotional range. I can’t wait to start work with them.”

Adrian Edmondson will play Malvolio. Adrian is most well-known for his numerous TV credits including The Young Ones, Bottom, Blackadder and more recently One of Us and War and Peace. In the role of Olivia is Kara Tointon, who is best known for her TV work including playing Rosalie Selfridge in ITV’s Mr Selfridge and Sound of Music Live! This year her credits have included ITV’s series The Halcyon and the UK tour of Gaslight (ATG/Smith & Brant).

Viola will be played by Dinita Gohil, who makes her RSC debut. Her previous theatre credits include The Hurling Rubble at Moon (Park Theatre) and Tartuffe (Birmingham Rep Theatre). She will also appear in the forthcoming BBC adaptation of The Boy with the Topknot.

John Hodgkinson returns to the RSC following his roles in Christopher Luscombe’s Love’s Labour’s Lost and Much Ado About Nothing to play Sir Toby Belch. And Vivien Parry returns to play Maria, following her role in the critically acclaimed The Shoemaker’s Holiday (Swan Theatre, 2015).

Also joining the company are Esh Alladi as Sebastian, Nicholas Bishop as Orsino, Michael Cochrane as Sir Andrew Aguecheek, Beruce Khan as Feste, Verity Kirk as Parlour Maid, Joseph Prowen as Footman and Sarah Twomey as Fabia.

Further casting for Twelfth Night will be announced later this year.

Twelfth Night is directed by Christopher Luscombe and designed by Simon Higlett with lighting by Tim Mitchell. Music is by Nigel Hess and sound by Jeremy Dunn. Movement is by Jenny Arnold and fights by Kevin McCurdy.
