Casting has been announced for the world premiere of Cassie McFarlane and Adrian Hope’s new play Mad as Hell, which runs at London’s Jermyn Street Theatre from 7 to 24 February 2018 as part of its Scandal Season.
A bar in Jamaica. The early 1960s. When womanizing, hell-raising film star Peter Finch meets Eletha Barrett, a charismatic island girl, they both get more than they bargained for. The relationship between Peter and Eletha scandalises Hollywood, and culminates in Finch’s Oscar-winning performance in Network.
A battle between the ‘isms and schisms’ of race and prejudice and the courage of love, Mad As Hell reveals for the first time how the backdrop to Finch’s iconic performance was as fiery as the role he played.
Directed by Cassie McFarlane, this world premiere production will star Stephen Hogan, Vanessa Donovan and Alexandra Mardell.
Talking about the play, McFarlane said: “Like many Jamaicans, I have known the story of Peter and Eletha since childhood. I think it will speak to many people about Hollywood, about prejudice, and about mixed-race relationships. I am excited to be bringing their amazing story to life in Mad As Hell, and to direct its world premiere in the middle of the West End.”
The production has set design by Cherry Truluck, lighting design by Tim Mascall, sound design by David Beckham and choreography by Ryan Francois.
