Rufus Norris’ production of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s The Threepenny Opera will be broadcast live to cinemas around the world as part of the NT Live season. The National Theatre’s new adaptation by Simon Stephens will screened live from the National’s Olivier Theatre on the 22 September 2016 at 7pm.

Norris’ production stars Rory Kinnear at Macheath, Haydn Gwynne as Mrs Peachum and Rosalie Craig as Polly Peachum. The creative team includes designs by Vicki Mortimer, choreography by Imogen Knight, lighting by Paule Constable and sound by Paul Arditti.

As London scrubs up for a coronation, thieves are on the make, the whores are out looking for a good time, while the police try and cover it all up. Mr and Mrs Peachum are eagerly anticipating another bumper day in the beggary business but their daughter didn’t come home last night. Mack the Knife is back in town.

This is the latest in the NT Live season of live broadcasts, which have previously included Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller; War HorseMan and Superman with Ralph Fiennes; and Everyman with Chiwetel Ejiofor.

NT Live launched in 2009 and has gone on to broadcast more than 40 productions both at the National and other theatres in the UK.

Productions outside of the National to have been broadcasted include A View from the Bridge from the Young Vic; Macbeth from the Manchester International Festival; and Hangmen and The Audience from London’s West End. Its most popular broadcast has been the Barbican’s hugely popular production of Hamlet, starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
