Three new plays by Caryl Churchill and a first mainstage appearance by Bezhti author Gurpreeet Kaur Bhatti are among the highlights of the Royal Court Theatre’s next season, a whole year of work which spans from September 2019 to August 2020.

Churchill, now 80, will present her trio of works – Glass, Kill and Bluebeard –  together in performance for one month starting on 18 September at Jerwood Theatre Downstairs.

Introducing the forthcoming season, Royal Court artistic director Vicky Featherstone commented:

“It is a privilege to be able to announce a whole year’s worth of work at the Royal Court and is testament to writers, both experienced and brand new to us that we have such an extraordinary range of voices, experiences, stories and provocations to put in front of our audiences. This year attempts to reflect [stories] from the intensely private to the global stories of our times.”

Highlights of the year include:

  • Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti’s A Kind of People to be staged in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs
  • A History of Water in the Middle East by Sabrina Mahfouz
  • A season of work – Open Court Climate Emergency – focusing on environmental challenges
  • A National Theatre Wales co-production of Ed Thomas’ On Bear Ridge
  • Alistair MacDowall’s Glow, examing the Victorian obsession with spiritualism
  • Pinter Commission winner Sarah Hanly’s debut play Purple Snowflakes and Titty Wanks
