Sam Mendes’ Olivier Award-winning production of Jez Butterworth’s The Ferryman received equal top billing at this week’s Tony Awards 2019 nominations announcement alongside the hit Broadway production of To Kill a Mockingbird. The productions both have nine nods including ones for Ferryman actors Paddy Considine (Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play), Fionnula Flanagan and Laura Donnelly.
The nine categories in which The Ferryman has picked up nominations are Best Play, Best Performance by an Actor/Actress in a Leading Role in a Play, Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Sound Design and Best Direction.
The Almeida Theatre and Sonia Friedman Productions were also celebrating the news that the Broadway transfer of James Graham’s Ink had received six nominations (including those for director Rupert Goold and actor Bertie Carvel).
Actresses Ruth Wilson (King Lear) and Janet McTeer (Bernhardt/Hamlet) have also been nominated for acting awards.
The most nominations (14) went to Hadestown (music, lyrics and book by Anaïs Mitchell, developed with Rachel Chavkin) which finished a run at the National Theatre in January this year. Four of the cast – Eva Noblezada, Amber Gray, Andre De Shields and Patrick Page – have been recognised.
Close behind was Ain’t Too Proud—The Life of the Temptations (12), along with Tootsie (11), Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! (8), Beetlejuice (8) and The Prom (7).
The 73rd Tony Awards take place at New York’s Radio City Music Hall on 9 June 2019, hosted by James Corden.
