With data thefts and cyber attacks dominating the news headlines, William Stanton’s highly topical new play THE OLD ROOM gets its world premiere at London’s White Bear Theatre, where it runs for a strictly limited season from 24 April to 12 May 2018, with a press night on 26 April. Get booking!
Theft of privacy, eavesdropping and cyber attacks. And that’s in public. Cambridge Analytica used 50 million people’s private data to influence an election. The US government takes data from the whole world.
THE OLD ROOM is a bar where people meet, sometimes by accident. It’s also a memory of a place in Prague where Sam used to go when he worked at the British Embassy; a place where there was desire, betrayal and a honey trap. Now Sam works in cyber security helping to fend off attacks on people like 4C, a political lobbying organisation.
William Stanton’s play talks to us through characters who wrestle with the theft of privacy by governments with unlimited reach and zero accountability. THE OLD ROOM was developed with Script Readers. This full-scale premiere production follows workshops and a rehearsed reading at the Park Theatre. Stanton comments:
“The Old Room was inspired by the documentary film Citizenfour, which shows us why Edward Snowden made the decision to blow the whistle on US and UK government surveillance. It’s a play about what’s happening right now, and every new revelation about Facebook, or stolen personal data, or election-rigging, or cyber attacks, makes it more immediate.”
William Stanton writes for BBC radio drama and the stage. His King’s Cross Award-winning play Foul Tide was presented at the Courtyard Hoxton, Power was at the Bike Shed Exeter and the Canal Cafe, and Glory was at the Bike Shed Exeter. He has had rehearsed readings of new work at 503, the Actors’ Centre, Exeter Northcott and Park Theatre.
THE OLD ROOM stars Nick Limm (as Sam), along with Patrick Romer, Nicole Roberts, Karina Knapinska, Miranda Shamiso and Frazer Blaxland. The premiere production is directed by Martin Harvey and designed by Natalia Alvarez, Charlotte Evans is assistant director. It’s produced by Shenagh Govan.
THE OLD ROOM runs from 24 April to 12 May 2018 at the White Bear Theatre, Kennington Park Road, London SE11 4DJ, with performances Tuesdays to Saturdays at 7.30pm and Sunday matinees at 4pm. Tickets are priced £16 (concessions £12). CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE!
