The revival of Pinnock’s 2005 short play, which arrives at the Arcola after a UK tour, runs at the Dalston venue from 10 to 21 December 2019.
When a young man jumps in front of a train Cyrus is driving, the mysterious circumstances prompt him to search for answers. In pursuing the truth of Sonny’s final hours, Cyrus is led to laundrette worker Christine, as the past begins to catch up with people whose lives are changed forever.
Re-written and re-imagined by playwright Pinnock, this new version of One Under explores the themes of the power of guilt and the quest for atonement and delves into the fragility of human relationships.
Stanley J Browne leads the cast of disabled and non-disabled performers, playing Cyrus. He returns to the Arcola, where he previously appeared in Titus Andronicus. Browne is joined in the cast by Reece Pantry, who plays Sonny, and Clare-Louise English, who plays Christine. Shenagh Govan and Evlyne Oyedokun complete the cast. Birmingham Repertory Theatre’s Deputy Artistic Director Amit Sharma directs One Under.
This production of One Under, co-produced by Graeae and Theatre Royal Plymouth, was commissioned by Ramps on the Moon, a collaborative network of Arts Council of England National Portfolio Organisations working to achieve a step change in the employment and artistic opportunities for disabled performers and creative teams, and a cultural change in the participating organisations to enable accessibility to become a central part of their thinking and aesthetics. Each performance of One Under incorporates both audio-description and captioning.
