Following the success of their spooky October tale Haunted, Uncanny Collective return to the London stage later this month, staging a revival of Anthony Neilson’s shocking comic drama Penetrator at the Lion and Unicorn Theatre. Book your tickets now!
Neilson’s acclaimed play runs at the Kentish Town venue from 19 to 23 November 2019.
Max and Alan are spending another night in their squalid flat, indulging in a routine evening of cards, drugs and tea. When Tadge, an old school friend, arrives unexpectedly from military service, his troubling behavior sets in motion an evening that none of them will ever forget.
Neilson’s drama premiered at Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre in 1993, before transferring to the Finborough Theatre and then the Royal Court Theatre. The play, which tackles toxic masculinity and nostalgia for lost youth, was considered one of the earliest examples of ‘in-yer-face’ theatre and was described by the Sunday Times as “one of the blackest, funniest and most shocking dramas you will ever see”.
The premiere production of Penetrator helped build the reputation of Neilson, who also directed it, as one of the most exciting and controversial playwrights of the last 30 years. His other plays, which include Normal, The Censor and Stitching, each set out to shock and disturb. Indeed, this production comes with a warning that it contains strong language and violence which may disturb some audience members.
While Neilson directed the original production, the revival of Penetrator at the Lion and Unicorn Theatre is directed by Uncanny Collective’s Steve Fitzgerald, who also stars in the production. Fitzgerald, who co-wrote and directed previous Uncanny Collective show Haunted, is joined in the cast by Haunted co-star Paul Linghorn and Luke Willats. The trio reunite having worked on a production of Penetrator that ran at the Etcetera Theatre in 2016.
Uncanny Collective’s production is part of an exciting winter season at the lauded Lion and Unicorn Theatre, which includes satire in which the almighty is questioned God 2.0, comic tale Up The Bunty!, the return of critically acclaimed drama At Last, and Mad Wolf’s one-act production of Julius Caesar.
Penetrator runs at The Lion & Unicorn Theatre, 42-44 Gaisford St, Kentish Town, London NW5 2ED from 19 to 23 November with performances from Tuesday to Saturday at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced £12. CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE!!
