National Gallery, London – until 23 December 2022
Guest reviewer: Bibi Lucille

Endearing, funny and charming, the National Gallery’s Picture Perfect Christmas is truly the perfect event for wholesome family fun. Writer and director Francesca Renee Reid bases the production on Avercamp’s ‘A Winter Scene With Skaters Near A Castle’, with a beautiful castle set and snowy landscape.

The story follows two friends, Frederick and Maaike (Ciaran McCormack and Elizabeth Coverdale), who meet woodland creatures on their way, played by Kieron Providence, Jaydean Cramb and Madeline Hagerty. Throughout the performance, each character sings a song, varying from themes of bravery and resourcefulness (composed by Edward Court).

A highlight of the show was the villain, Engelberg (played by Richard Holborn), who charismatically carried some brilliant songs and prompted much laughter from the audience.

The National Gallery’s Picture Perfect Christmas is a magical family show and the perfect event to start the seasonal festivities.
