Marlene Sidaway, who played Maureen in acclaimed sitcom Mum, stars on stage this summer, starring in Penelope Rawlins’ new play Pigeons at the Hen and Chickens Theatre. Book your tickets now!
The production runs as part of the Camden Fringe from 31 July to 2 August 2019. Following its London engagement, it transfers to Aldeburgh’s Jubilee Hall for a one-off performance on 4 August.
Set on a park bench, under the watchful eye of a pair of amorous pigeons, a pair of passing strangers bridge the perceived technological divide that separates their generations and prosper from each other’s wisdom, proving that good old fashioned face-to-face conversation and social media need not be antagonists. And that we’re never too old or young to learn about what it is to be human.
In addition to appearing opposite Lesley Manville and Peter Mullan in BAFTA Award-winning comedy Mum, Sidaway boasts television credits including Life Begins, Midsomer Murders and Pride and Prejudice. She’s most recently been seen in Beneath The Blue Rinse at Park Theatre, and in 2018 appeared in Returning to Haifa at Finborough Theatre. She’s joined in Pigeons by newcomer Max Fricker.
The production is directed by Dugald Bruce-Lockhart. The actor and director was formerly Associate with the renowned all-male Shakespeare ensemble Propeller. His other directing credits include Catalan-speaking productions of As You Like It and Romeo and Juliet for Barcelona’s Teatre Akadèmia Theatre Company.
Pigeons is Rawlins’ debut play. The actress and voice over has appeared in productions including How the Other Half Loves, Absent Friends (both at The Mill at Sonning), The Cage, Crooked Wood, (both Yvonne Arnaud Theatre) and Lost and Found (Tristan Bates Theatre). She has also narrated more than 200 audiobooks and in 2013 was nominated for Audible’s Narrator of the Year.
Rawlins’ play is one of 300 production playing across 27 venues in London as part of the 14th Camden Fringe this summer. Those shows include pieces as diverse as tale of affairs and social media Letting Go, family show about democracy Rox Paper and the Scissors and drama about anxiety & workplace bullying Blue Tights, Red Knickers and an ‘S’ on Her Vest.
