“It was my choice to do to it”
Brodie, a gifted research linguist, is expecting her first child. When she receives unsettling news about the baby she carries. Her girlfriend is unsympathetic and the medical profession provides few answers. Brodie’s search for guidance leads her to two unlikely sources: the elderly speaker of a vanishing language… and a gorilla at the zoo.
“A crisp fast-moving, tough-minded but often comic play about love, language, memory, culture and commitment” Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Madeleine George’s irreverent, witty and startlingly original play reveals the beauty and the limits of human language. Precious Little was first produced in 2009 by New York’s Clubbed Thumb Theatre and has also been staged in other US cities including Chicago and Pittsburgh.
At Brockley Jack Studio Theatre, the three-hander stars Jenny Delisle, Jessica Kinsey and Deborah Maclaren. The production is directed by Kate Bannister and designed by Karl Swinyard, with lighting by Ben Jacobs, sound by Julian Starr, costumes by Martin J Robinson and assistant direction by Laurel Marks.
Author Madeleine George‘s plays The (curious case of the) Watson Intelligence (a Pulitzer Prize finalist), Seven Homeless Mammoths Wander New England (a Susan Smith Blackburn finalist), Precious Little and The Zero Hour (Jane Chambers Award, Lambda Literary Award finalist) have been produced by Playwrights Horizons, 13P, Clubbed Thumb, Shotgun Players in Berkeley, City Theatre in Pittsburgh, Theater Wit in Chicago, and Perseverance Theater in Alaska, among other places.
George has received a Whiting Award, the Princess Grace Playwriting Fellowship, and two MacDowell Fellowships, and she holds commissions from the Sloan Foundation/Manhattan Theatre Club, the Big Ten Theatre Consortium, and the Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis. She is currently a resident playwright at New Dramatists, a founding member of the Obie-Award-winning playwrights collective 13P, and the Mellon Playwright in Residence at Two River Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey.
