Love London Love Culture rounds up the reviews for Nick Bagnall’s  production.

The Telegraph★★★ “The performances are variable. Several odd dramatic choices (a lisping John of Hainault, an overtly preening Earl of Lancaster) disempower the idea that the courtiers are a genuine threat to the king, that the future of a whole kingdom is at stake.”

Time Out: ★★ “In such a simply staged show, it’s hard to convey much sense of the king’s impulsive indulgence.”

boyz.co.uk: ★★★★ “The passion and power of this Plantagenet King is vividly brought to life and the intrigue and treachery of a quarrelling court of the time is examined in very fine detail. An absorbing history lesson.”

The Upcoming: ★★★★ “The historic and intimate candlelit space of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse makes for an incredible theatrical experience. There really couldn’t be a work better suited to the venue than Edward II. The combination of incredible performances, music and a tight production make this an engaging and utterly watchable show – perhaps another favourite of the season.”

QX Magazine: “Edward II may have us pitying its queer characters, which is a pity that we’ve only been free to feel in recent decades. Though not quite stirring us to tears, this production has you leaving the theatre with the bitter taste of injustice resting on your tongue.”

Edward II continues to play at the Shakespeare’s Globe until 20 April 2019.
