Rex Pickett’s stage adaptation of his wine-soaked novel, which also became the Oscar-winning 2004 film, received its European premiere this week at the St James Theatre. It’s directed by David Grindley and runs until 9 July 2016. Here is some of what is being said about the show so far:

The Arts Desk: “a fun, fruity evening lacking that counterbalancing acidity.”

Londonist: ★★★ Johnny Fox wrote: “it turns out that watching people drink expensive wine is sometimes not much more fun than watching expensive paint dry.”

Exeunt Magazine: “this play left me cold, angry and profoundly disappointed with the opposite sex.”

The Telegraph: ★★ Chris Bennion found: “The script bubbles with great one-liners but the whole thing lacks heart.”

Evening Standard: ★★★★ Fiona Mountford was more enthusiastic saying: “David Grindley’s wonderfully fluid stage production re-assures at once, with its playful but confident grip on the dynamics of the various relationships on show.”

The Stage: ★★ Natasha Tripney found: “There’s some nice stuff about the disappointments that life doles out but it gets lost in amid this (Jacob’s) creaky production.”

The Guardian: ★★ Mark Lawson wrote: “But, despite some stinging punchlines and genuinely educative speeches about wine that should boost the interval bar takings, the corking scenes are outnumbered by those that feel corked.”
