Following a hit run at the Lion & Unicorn Theatre earlier this year, Turn Point Theatre’s acclaimed drama River in the Sky receives an extended run at The Hope Theatre this summer. Book your tickets now.
The play, written and directed by Peter Taylor, runs at the Islington venue from 6 to 24 August 2019.
“We are all just an assortment of stories. Lies and truths all muddled by our own narrative.”
Young couple, Jack and Ellie were trying to have a family. But after the sudden loss of their child, they both start to struggle coping with reality. While one hides away in a dilapidated caravan, escaping to wondrous, childish adventures through their imagination, the other tries to forget the painful event and move on with their day to day life.
Unable to heal separately, they both come together to drink Earl Grey tea, argue over biscuits and tell each other magnificent stories, as bittersweet escapism from their mourning. But as they tell these stories of battling massive, slender dark monsters with many claws, observing a beautiful winged creature with golden eyes and being tickled by fast beings that can’t be seen underwater, reality drifts further from reach. Will they spiral further into grief or can these stories somehow bring them back?
Taylor’s play explores ideas of grief, fertility and the power of storytelling. When it ran at the Lion and Unicorn in April, The Reviews Hub described it as “Genuinely unusual and exciting” in its 4-star review.
Lindsey Cross and Howard Horner star as Ellie and Jack in River In The Sky. Cross’s previous credits include Panning for Gold, Generation Z and You Me Bum Bum Train, while Horner returns to The Hope Theatre where he previously appeared in his own one-man play My Evolution of Cave Painting.
During its run at The Hope Theatre, River In The Sky will be raising money for 4Louis, a UK charity that supports families through miscarriage, stillbirth and child loss.
Following River In The Sky‘s summer run at The Hope Theatre, the Islington venue will host Call Me Fury, Sasha Wilson‘s tale of witch trials from across the world, which opens in September.
