Darkfield’s Séance is now in its final week in London as this year’s VAULT Festival winds to a close. Here’s a reminder of what some of the critics – including two Mates – have said about this spooky sensory sensation. Better get booking before it’s too late!

Séance, a performance in complete darkness, explores the psychology of a group of people who have been bombarded with suggestible material. It is an intense sonic performance for twenty people at a time, lasting for twenty terrifying minutes.

After a sell-out run at Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017, Séance has toured across the UK – including dates at London’s Almeida Theatre and Latitude Festival – as well as Australia and Mexico. Parked up in its shipping container outside The Vaults until the end of this year’s VAULT Festival, twenty-minute performances run from 6pm every night until Sunday 17 March 2019.

Review highlights

Voice Mag

Kheira Bey: The show was deliciously eerie, with extraordinary binaural sounds which infiltrate your hearing via headphones… An incomparable experience and one you will never forget.

The Scotsman – ★★★★

Rory Ford: Not a hokey recreation of a Victorian parlour trick but a contemporary experiment in fear and imagination that prods the audience’s rationality to see how strong it is.

View from the Cheap Seats

Shanine Salmon: Seance is a sensory rather than a theatrical performance. In a small audience, you find yourselves being asked to contact the dead… It is like being in a live horror film… an emotional yet exciting experience.

The Play’s the Thing

Joanna Trainor: The audio skills in Séance are as extraordinary as the title suggests. Binaural sound completely overwhelms, and the complete darkness in the shipping container means the main sense relied on is hearing.

The Stage – ★★★★

Natasha Tripney: Darkness is a canvas. We fill it with our fears. We populate it with monsters of our making… It’s skin-tingling, breath-quickening stuff.

The Wee Review – ★★★★

Claire Wood: I can’t tell you anything about the twenty-minute show without spoiling it. It is unbelievably, stupendously suspenseful… The care and attention given to this production by Darkfield is stunning.
