Having toured the UK since autumn 2018, the hit adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel comes to Greenwich from 7 to 11 May 2019, before continuing to investigate its way around the country and then heading off to China.
When Mary Morstan arrives at Baker Street to request help following the mysterious disappearance of her father, Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr Watson are plunged into a murky world of deception and a complex plot involving murder, corruption and stolen jewels.
Adapted and directed by Nick Lane, the production combines original live music, high energy theatricality and ensemble storytelling to create a piece packed with adventure, romance, comedy and one or two rather brilliant deductions.
The Sign of Four is the second of Conan Doyle’s Holmes novels, following A Study in Scarlet. In 2014, it was voted number 26 in The Guardian’s list of the 100 best novels written in English. Conan Doyle wrote two more full-length novels about the detective, The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Valley of Fear. The other Holmes tales were short stories published in anthologies.
In Sherlock Holmes: The Sign of Four, Luke Barton and Joseph Derrington take on the roles of Holmes and his companion Dr Watson. Zach Lee plays Jonathan Small with Stephanie Rutherford as Mary Morstan. Christopher Glover and Ru Hamilton complete the cast as Dost Akbar and Thaddeus Sholto. In addition to playing numerous roles, the ensemble also play music composed for the production by Tristan Parkes.
The production has already collected fantastic reviews as it has travelled around the UK, being described as “Exciting and incredibly entertaining” (The Sussex Newspaper), “A masterclass in all things theatrical” (Love Shrewsbury) and “A dark, gripping stage presentation” (Shropshire What’s On).
