Small Things Theatre Company launches a season of female-focused new work at this year’s VAULT Festival, with two new plays and two star-studded fundraising events in aid of the UN Women’s #HeForShe campaign for gender equality. The company’s Vault season, running from 21 February to 11 March 2018, launches with two new plays written and directed by women: Anything Is Possible If You Think About It Hard Enough written by Small Things’ co-founder Cordelia O’Neill and directed by Kate Budgen, and Boots, written by Jessica Butcher and Sacha Voit, directed by Lucy Wray and co-produced with Butcher and Dee.

These are complemented by two major fundraising events in aid of the international #HeForShe campaign for gender equality: a “What Actually Helps?” debate with a star-studded panel of experts including Robert Webb, and the company’s acclaimed variety night, including new contributions on the subject by leading playwrights such as Simon Stephens and Tamsin Oglesby. (For the latter, the company is also inviting submissions, of up to 15 minutes, from new writers – apply online by 23 February.)

About Small Things

Small Things Theatre aspires to delight, fascinate and challenge by producing and nurturing new theatre with a strong focus on education. The company collaborates with playwrights, actors, musicians, comedians and poets and, through its regular Night Of Small Things, provides a platform for artists to experiment and showcase their work. The Small Things education department reaches out to and inspires students of all ages. All plays staged carry a strong social message, which is explored further in workshops and post-show discussions.

“Theatre allows us to see things from other people’s perspective, and Small Things Theatre believe it is a force for good that can help, heal, unite as well as thoroughly entertain.”

Why is the theatre called “Small Things”? Co-founders Cordelia O’Neill and Philip Scott-Wallace explain:

“As well as our mission statement, we delight in the small moments in drama that move hearts and minds. A look, a sigh, a move or a single word can make your heart burst or your gut drop, and it is only the most exquisite productions that find these minute details to bring the stage alive. It is our desire to produce all our work with moments that reflect how wonderfully nuanced life is reminding our audiences that it is often the small things that make a big difference.”

BOOTS | VAULT Festival 2018
7-11 March: Boots

She braves the wilds of Lynx Africa, talking trees and infertility to find an unlikely friend in Liz as she tracks down the truth. Boots is a new play about ending the silence that would keep even Ginger Rogers on her toes. It’s written by Jessica Butcher and Sacha Voit and directed by Lucy Wray.

The world is at a turning point. People everywhere understand and support the idea of gender equality. They know it’s not just a women’s issue, it’s a human rights issue. And when these powerful voices are heard, they will change the world. The time for that change is now. The United Nations’ Solidarity Movement for Gender Equality has launched #HeForShe to invite people around the world to stand together to create a bold, visible force for equal rights.
