Matt Browne (played brilliantly by Michael Brandon) is the main character for our play. Recently widowed, Matt has come to London to celebrate his birthday, but more importantly it is part of the healing process with the immense grief felt from his loss. We gradually see this manifest itself in various different and very touching ways.
Set in 1942 this National tour of Terence Rattigan‘s wartime masterpiece is celebrating the 70th anniversary of VE day and is drawn from Rattigan’s own experiences of his RAF days of which he is pictured in the program, which incidentally makes for a fascinating read for all ages. With such a stellar cast as this, it was bound to be a fitting tribute to a historic time.
Derived in 2002 from the 1967 Julie Andrews movie, Thoroughly Modern Millie is thoroughly old fashioned. It’s sexist: all the women are actresses or typists; racist: landlady Mrs Meers feigns orientalism and speaks pantomime Cantonese to her migrant Hong Kong laundrymen; heteronormative: every flapper’s ambition is to secure a rich businessman husband and even white slavery is dismissed as “well, it’s one way to get a man”, but so heartwarming and jolly you can almost forgive its cartoon morality.
