‘One of the best nights at the theatre you could wish for’: BLOOD BROTHERS – Touring
Blood Brothers is a musical that has had a special place in my heart for a long time – it will always be a five star production in my eyes and has yet to deviate from that honour. Each time I see it feels like watching again for the first time as it’s easy to find something I may have missed on other occasions.

Go and see Blood Brothers for yourself, it’ll challenge your way of thinking, make you want to sing along, have you crying with laughter and sobbing with heartbreak.
New Year’s Resolutions: Break a Leg looks back & plans ahead
2018 – a new year to embrace new shows and experiences in the theatrical bubble I often find myself mooching around in. As I’ve said in my previous more personal blog posts, I rarely take to my own blog to have a chat – but it’s a new year and I felt an update was… Continue Reading →

2017 has been a bumper year for Break A Leg, we’ve literally been all over the place in as many theatres as possible and loving every minute.
BLOOD BROTHERS – Touring ★★★★
Blood Brothers is one of Break A Leg’s favourites and it’s always a due to review the show, the dynamics are different each time and yet the overall drama, comic timing and splendour of the production never waivers.
Blood Brothers: Sarah Jane Buckley is ‘my’ Mrs J
Mrs Johnstone is the lynchpin in the story, there wouldn’t be a tale to tell without her, after all. The musical numbers that she sings are classics, from Tell Me It’s Not True to Easy Terms and every actress who’s taken on the coveted role has put their own stamp on the part.
INTERVIEW: Spotlight On… Blood Brothers’ Sarah Jane Buckley
I love playing Mrs Lyons, it’s a great part and an acting part which is what I do but as I’m also a singer it’s a lovely opportunity to do both, really.

Year in Review: Helen McWilliams’ top 5 touring shows of 2016
Touring productions are the vast majority of shows that I go along to review, so whittling down a shortlist of the top ones from 2016 is no mean feat. The task has been eased somewhat as a few of my personal idols have been treading the boards this year and their appearances were highlights in themselves.
BLOOD BROTHERS – Touring
Lyn Paul is described as the definitive Mrs Johnstone and last night, I saw the reason for this accolade, as she brought the house down in Blood Brothers at Malvern Theatres.
BLOOD BROTHERS – Touring
It was my third visit to see Willy Russell’s much loved production of Blood Brothers, and it’s telling when after a hat-trick of trips, I could return again and watch it another three times, at least.
BLOOD BROTHERS – Touring
A heart-wrenching tale of a family ruthlessly torn apart by society and yet intrinsically linked by fate, Blood Brothers has evolved into a classic modern British musical.
BLOOD BROTHERS – Touring
Every musical needs a great soaring tune to call its own. And Blood Brothers certainly has that.

Have you heard the story of the Johnstone twins…….? Sometimes as a reviewer, you finish watching a show thinking this is going to be the easiest review I’ve ever written and then you start to write it and hit a block? Why? Just because sometimes a performance that receives a full house standing ovation, is so incredible that its hard to find the words to do it justice! This is one of those occasions.
From Down Under: Blood Brothers in Melbourne
The West End’s third longest-running musical, Blood Brothers is a dramatically charged potboiler with a poetic book and lyrics by Willy Russell (Shirley Valentine, Educating Rita). Russell’s simple music is highly hummable and well matched to the lively working-class characters.
