The Beeb wheeled out Peter Capaldi for its launch of A Midsummer Night’s Dream due to air on BBC1 at the end of May. Not because he’s in it but because the entire play, adapted to an ‘accessible’ 90 minutes by Who’s reinventor Russell T Davies and filmed with the special effects team at Roath Lock in Cardiff where Dr Who is made, it’s fashioned specifically for Whovian fans.

CIRCUS DIARIES: Continental Circus Berlin, 2016

A pristine white tent in the carpark of the football stadium marks the temporary pitch of Continental Circus Berlin in Cardiff. A spacious foyer tent is edged with stands selling burgers, candyfloss, flashy toys or popcorn but, passing through the canvas tunnel, the airy lightness gives way to vivid reds inside the main big top. Green tinged lights and neon lit stairs around the ring doors, topped with hooped arches, suggest a Weimar-era Berlin, while a much more modern giant cuddly snake takes pride of place in the centre of the ring among the other soft raffle prizes on offer.

Only the Brave is a landmark production for Wales Millennium Centre. For the past 10 years, it has been a leading touring venue, as well as providing a home for smaller local companies to create work in it’s smaller spaces. However, it has yet to originate new work on the main stage…until now. In this co-production with the Soho Theatre, Daniel Sparrow Productions and Birdsong Productions, Only the Brave is a brand-new British musical theatre production.

There is something to be said for some good old fashioned storytelling in theatre. The kind that sits an audience and does simply that; tells a story. While I love theatre that plays with form, stylistic theatre and sometimes even big flashy theatre, I think we sometimes forget that what we’re after is a story. And Conor McPherson’s St Nicholas gives us exactly that, in a deceptively simple manner.
