We are now onto the third of my new weekly musical theatre podcast series ShenTens. This week I count down my top ten favourite Sondheim songs — at least my favourites right now.
And so here it is… my top 10 musicals of the decade. It turned out to be a slightly emotional journey. But it turns out musicals meant a lot in that time and I’ll fight anyone who says musicals aren’t a serious artform.
With a new year fast approaching, it is an interesting time to reflect on small changes across the theatre landscape in 2019 that will continue to shape how UK theatre will look as it moves into a new decade.
We should celebrate the fact that within the space of a year London has played host to stagings of not one but two Sondheim masterpieces that have all but redefined them in theatrical terms: Company and Follies.
This year’s Olivier Awards winners certainly highlighted the wonderful diversity in theatre this year – now can we please broadcast the full ceremony?
Come From Away, Company and The Inheritance led the way with four awards each at the Olivier Awards 2019 with Mastercard, announced at a ceremony tonight (Sunday 7 April) at London’s Royal Albert Hall, hosted by Jason Manford.
Elliott & Harper Productions’ Company and Shakespeare’s Globe’s production of Emilia are among the recipients of the third annual Tonic Awards which have been announced at a ceremony held at The May Fair Hotel, hosted by Tracy Ann Oberman.
