The critically-acclaimed hit Girl from the North Country, written and directed by Conor McPherson with music and lyrics by Bob Dylan, is to play London’s Gielgud Theatre in for a limited season from 10 December 2019 to 1 February 2020 (press night is 16 December).

Less than a week to go until The Barn – a brand-new, 200-seat, state-of-the-art theatre in the Cotswolds – officially opens its doors to the press with its inaugural production of Tony Award-winning family musical The Secret Garden. And leading Broadway director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell, who has signed up as one of the theatre’s stellar ambassadors, has a message for the cast.

The stage is set beautifully. A gathering of men, singing to the sky, tell of the distant depths they travel to for their work, and their hopes of returning to the surface to see the sun once again. After this powerful opening, the next few scenes didn’t quite live up to what was promised at the outset. There were a few hurried lines, a song where the characters were drunk, some overwrought emotions that seemed out-of-place at the outset of a show.
