WORKING – Southwark Playhouse

In London theatre, Musicals, Opinion, Reviews by Jonathan BazLeave a Comment

It is remarkable how the mundane, simple and modest elements of hard graft, so often taken for granted, become the catalyst for the way you think and live your life, despite your best efforts to be defined by your dreams. Working, a musical directed by Luke Sheppard at the Southwark Playhouse, capitalises on that universal revelation with an incredible cast performing heartfelt, heartwarming and heart-wrenching stories of real people.

GUYS & DOLLS – Touring

Consequently I’ve seen many stage versions and some with equal star billing as the motion picture which started my love affair with it. So did this fresh touring company live up to my high expectations?

The current London cast of Gordon Greenberg’s Chichester production of Guys and Dolls, recently moved across town to the Phoenix Theatre, is a delight. This company’s polished excellence give a delightful treatment of Frank Loesser’s words and tunes, themselves a carefully crafted tribute to Damon Runyon’s Broadway fables.

GUYS AND DOLLS – West End

This is a revisit, to a partly recast Chichester show: and I must admit I had qualms about losing that generosity, that overflowing vigour you get with the classic musicals on the Festival Theatres’ great three-sided arena. Back in the retro, ornate proscenium world of the Savoy I feared it would be somehow constrained by the square magnificence. And, not least, whether the amazing 3D choreography by Andrew Wright and Carlos Acosta would feel cramped.

Why Nicely Nicely Johnson is no longer ruined for me (though Clive Rowe remains a giant)

For years Guys and Dolls has been all but ruined for me: that’s what happens when you are lucky enough to see a definitive production and performance. I speak, of course, of Richard Eyre‘s legendary National Theatre revival of this 1950 roadway classic. And, what’s more, I didn’t even see the original.
