Ruth Wilson is strong casting in the central role with a, for once, restrained Ivo van Hove directing.

Tanika Gupta’s superb reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s modern classic A Doll’s House is both entertaining and deep.
‘Deeply morose’: HEDDA GABLER – Touring
Look, I appreciate it’s never rainbows and sunshine in Hedda Gabler but, even by Ibsen’s standards, this National Theatre production is intense and deeply morose.
HEDDA GABLER – Touring ★★★★
Unpredictable, thrilling and tense. Lizzy Watts is bold and fearless as Hedda Gabler in Patrick Marber’s engrossing update of the Ibsen classic.
HEDDA GABLER – Touring ★★★★★
The desperation of the characters is palpable largely to a perfect set designed by Jan Versweyweld; a blank cold white box with the characters observed like rats trapped in a box.
HEDDA GABLER – Touring ★★★★
Stark and tense, Ivo van Hove’s production of Hedda Gabler for the English National Theatre, is a thoroughly unnerving reading of Ibsen’s great play.

HEDDA GABLER – National Theatre
Ruth Wilson’s work is stunning, though – her performance is up there with Denise Gough’s in People, Places and Things. She successfully grapples with Hedda’s emotional changeability and displays a stunning range of aggression, vulnerability and volatility.
HEDDA GABLER – National Theatre

REVIEW ROUND-UP: Hedda Gabler at the National Theatre
Ruth Wilson takes on the leading role in this Ibsen classic, radically reinterpreted in Ivo Van Hove’s debut production for the National Theatre. It runs in rep in the Lyttelton Theatre until 21 March 2017. What have critics made of it?
HEDDA GABLER – National Theatre
In this new version of Ibsen’s play by Patrick Marber, director Ivo van Hove has the equally extraordinary talents of Ruth Wilson leading his company. And as with his revelatory A View From The Bridge, this is a contemporary reworking of a classic that will frustrate some with its froideur but left me gasping at its gut-wrenching rawness.
HEDDA GABLER – National Theatre
