As somebody who loves a listicle plus a bandwagon to jump on, how could I NOT compile my list of my top 20 new (to me) shows of 2022? It’s been 12 months in which live entertainment has come back with an encouraging roar, although the impending cost of living crisis is inevitably, and understandably, causing anxiety in theatrical circles. Please do get out there, if you can, and support your local venue in 2023.

The fact that Terry Gilliam and Leah Hausman’s production of Into The Woods at Theatre Royal Bath is one of two high profile productions currently running on either side of the Atlantic is testament to the durability and timelessness of Sondheim and book writer James Lapine’s creation.

INTO THE WOODS – Cardiff
Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival opened in style with Sondheim’s classic Into the Woods on Thursday night. It is a visually spectacular production which makes brilliant use of the fittingly wood-filled backdrop. And the large and impressive cast taking on one of musical theatre’s most challenging scores.

Rehearsals start this week in New York for innovative and ground breaking theatre company Fiasco’s enchanting reinvention of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s masterpiece Into The Woods. Both Sondheim and Lapine will join the company in rehearsal this week. The production opens on 12 July 2016 at the Menier, with previews from 1 July, and runs until 17 September. Casting of the original US company has also now been confirmed.
