While Matthew Warchus at the other end of the Cut from the Young Vic, may have the Old Vic that he presides over (without any subsidy) dark, too, actually the theatre has been in use regularly and has continued to produce throughout the pandemic, with its “In Camera” broadcasts of live performances that have been staged in its empty auditorium.
As the weeks of lockdown continue, with theatres up and down the country and around the world closed for the foreseeable future, I caught up with another artistic director, Anthony Biggs of west London’s Playground Theatre, to find out more how they were responding.
Winner of Best Fringe Theatre in the 2019 Stage Awards, The Barn Theatre has announced its line-up of five in-house productions for the upcoming 2019 season, including Michael Morpurgo’s The Butterfly Lion, Shakespeare’s Henry V, a brand new production of the comic thriller The 39 Steps, the award-winning musical Daddy Long Legs and a reimagining of Charles Dickens’ festive masterpiece A Christmas Carol.

Full shortlists are announced today in The Stage’s second annual Debut Awards, celebrating the UK’s most outstanding breakthrough talent in theatre. Big names – including Bryan Cranston, Aidan Turner and Broadway’s Kelli O’Hara in the West End category – are recognised alongside up and coming talent. Winners are announced at a ceremony on 23 September 2018.
