Opera North’s new production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute takes the composer’s final opera and brings out the fantastical and often comedic elements of what can at times be a dark story – several characters contemplate suicide on stage, but this version avoids ever feeling bogged down in these darker moments.
West Yorkshire Playhouse today announced it will change its name to Leeds Playhouse. The name change marks a new chapter in the theatre’s 50-year history.
A wonderfully warm hug of a show, perfectly produced and performed – and you know you’re gonna be humming the tunes all the way out of the theatre.
Raw in delivery and driven by big emotions, Sunshine on Leith returns to Edinburgh in a tough new version produced by the West Yorkshire Playhouse which retains the heart of the original 2007 musical while bringing it right up to date.
Humourous and heartfelt, Sunshine on Leith is utterly joyous. It is everything I want from my musical theatre and I couldn’t recommend it more.
West Yorkshire Playhouse mounts a new version of The Proclaimers musical Sunshine on Leith in April ahead of a UK tour.
Scrumptious, truly: The famous car is big, gleaming and flies just as it should in the new production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, at Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre until Oct 15, but the surrounding musical has a much more homely feel to it.
There’s an aura of timeless quality that pervades the touring production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, currently in its second week at Wimbledon. Ian Fleming’s wonderfully imaginative tale, so quintessentially English, married to the universal appeal of the Sherman Brothers’ songs has made for a 20th century fairy tale that ranks alongside the classics.
The stage version of the iconic 1968 British film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is not awful. Much-loved songs by the Sherman Brothers and the sensational sets coupled with stunning special effects make for an entertaining experience. Oh, and there is a flying car.
