Allelujah! is not a masterpiece, mainly because most of the characters are underdeveloped and there is too much going on, but it is extremely funny and it has something very urgent to say, and says it without compromise.
This was a glamorous night (yes, I know that’s by Ivor Novello): Joan Collins, Petula Clark, Richard Fleeshman, Michael Feinstein, Gloria Hunniford, Nanette Newman, Hayley Mills and Una Stubbs. And that was just the audience – plus Carol Thatcher and Jeffrey Archer for some hideous reason, although it was a great pleasure to see Gyles Brandreth buying their interval drinks because they weren’t on the guest list.
Spotted – and we use the word advisedly – at the Noel Coward Theatre this week was ex-Coronation Street barmaid Bet Lynch, sorry Miss Julie Goodyear OBE being feted by the management who are currently pondering a fresh cast for Calendar Girls when the EastEnders heavy mob moves out on 31 October.
