What the tiny Ipswich company Red Rose Chain, has achieved with Twelfth Night in the time of social-distancing is oddly brilliant, you’re unlikely to find a more uplifting show in this strange, frustrating summer.
Exuberantly funny, elegant as a Deauville hotel balcony and sharp as the crack of a 78rpm record over a lover’s head, Joanna Carrick’s witty miniaturised production does Noel Coward’s sparkiest comedy full justice. I say miniature – it’s full length – only because of the venue: the tiny but vigorous home of Red Rose Chain.
Joanna Carrick’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, a spirited three-hander, is astonishingly faithful to Lewis Carroll’s text and, importantly, spirit.
What Carrick has done in Put Out the Lights is tremendous: no Wolf-Hall aristocracies and political gaming, simply a sense of clear young voices speaking to us from a distant past, suffering and relishing seismic changes in the way a whole western world thought and believed.
